[Finance] Tracking Your Finances and Being Money-Wise

I talk with my daughter all the time about how she spends her money. Even though she is 21, she is very mature but she is still 21 and I was there once. Over time, I have seen her make a conscious effort to become wiser with her decisions as they pertain to her money and I am proud. She sent me an update on how her credit-monitoring and finances are going but in the last email, there was a link to a site called Mint.com.

I was unfamiliar with the site because I usually just do things the old-school way with a little new school flava! However, when I visited the site, I was intrigued. Mint.com is very user-friendly and can really help with saving money and overall managing finances. My daughter gets both texts and emails to her phone about large deposits or when Mint.com thinks her bank account balance is too low (for their standards) LOL. She even signed up for a credit monitoring service that costs $12.99 a month. Basically, the service allows users to keep track of fluctuations in their credit score AND it updates you whenever something changes!

Overall, this was a post based on personal experience and education, so I do recommend that you sign up…it’s FREE! However, if you all want to share sites and methods that work (or do not work) for you, please COMMENT!

[Fresh] In Case You Missed It…President Obama + his First Lady @ The Inaugural Ball

Yesterday was a beautiful day. Not only was it the day to remember a great man, but it was a day where we recognized another. President Barack Obama was sworn into his second term of presidency on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. There were hundreds of thousands of people watching and the event was probably the most star-studded inauguration to date! The whole day was filled with excitement, from the inauguration, to President Obama’s speech, the parade, and our favorite…the inaugural ball.

Our favorite power couple to love, love, love is definitely Barack and Michelle Obama. The two represent grace, beauty, family, values, sincerity, wisdom beyond their years and most importantly…TRUE LOVE. We all know the story of the Obamas [and if you do not, click here], and that seems like such a modern ‘Cinderella Story’. Below, you will see the video of the inauguration ball where the President speaks highly of his wife and they dance along to Jennifer Hudson’s rendition of Al Green’s ‘Let’s Stay Together’. Enjoy!

[Health] Exercise in Bed…Literally!

Get out of lazy and up into life! According to Shape Magazine, you can exercise in bed. They reported, “The bed actually can be an effective place to perform both cardiovascular and strength protocols. Just like Balance Disc or Bosu Ball, the bed can assist in development of proprioception, which is basically the feedback loop between the body and the brain. When an individual is performing exercises on an unstable surface, they are training their brain to fire more rapidly in order to make adjustments to the body’s position based on the circumstance. The body then reacts by re-stabilize, which has multiple benefits.”

WAIT! There is a catch…if you want this to be effective, that is. You will need to perform each exercise for 30-60 seconds, take no rest in between exercises and you may repeat them 1-3 times.

The plan:
1. Planks: This exercise is performed with your forearms and toes on the bed. It is important to keep your torso straight, with your head relaxed. Hold this position for as long as possible.

2. Push Ups: This exercise is a staple of P.E. classes across America and can truly help sculpt your arms, while adding strength to your core and mid-section. Start by placing your knees (for modified) or toes and hands (directly, under shoulders) on the bed, while keeping your back straight. Next, lower your chest to the bed, then return to starting position. Perform as many reps as possible.
3.Tic Taps: From the push up, simply take your right hand and tap in front of your left elbow. After you make contact with the elbow, quickly retract the hands to the original position and perform with the opposite hand. Continue tapping back and forth with each for as long as you can.
4. Table Tops: Begin by sitting on the bed with your legs extended in front of you and your arms resting at your sides. Next, bend your knees and place your feet flat on the bed. Both your hands and feet should be flat on the bed pointing in opposite directions of each other. Then, in a smooth action, press firmly into your hands and feet. Straighten your elbows, and lift your hips up toward the ceiling in order to form a straight line with your hips, while making your body appear like a table. Hold the position and squeeze your glutes. Retract, and repeat.
5. High Fives: You have just performed the table top and are ready for the grand finale! Bring you body back to the table top position with your hips in a straight line and quickly take your right hand off of the bed and reach towards the ceiling. Continue alternating between your right and left hand.
So, before you completely roll out of bed…try this out!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
New Children’s Book Celebrates Curly Hair and Diversity
Common Princess Stereotypes Now Have Some Competition
LA PORTE, TX – There’s a new princess in town, and she isn’t another little blonde girl with smooth, straight hair. Princess Truly is a clever little princess with fluffy, puffy curls and beautiful dark skin. She loves to read and solve problems, often saving the day with her magical curly hair. The story of how Princess Truly came to be is just as magical.
Author Kelly Greenawalt, mother of four adopted children, gained inspiration for the story almost by happenstance. After watching a favorite Disney movie for the hundredth time, her youngest daughter, Kaia, announced that her hair was not special or beautiful. Since none of the princesses looked like her, Kaia decided her gorgeous curls were ugly. Any parent can probably imagine the heartbreak that rushed over Greenawalt. As a problem solver herself, she set out to find a children’s storybook with a curly-haired princess with whom her daughters could relate, but came back empty handed. In response to the lack of such a story, she wrote her own. Princess Truly and The Hungry Bunny Problem was born.
In the story, people come from all over the land to ask Princess Truly for help with their problems. Lola Little needs help getting carrot seeds to grow for her hungry bunny friends. Princess Truly explains how seeds need water, sunlight, and rich soil in order to grow. Of course—Lola had forgotten to water the seeds! The two girls fetched water from a nearby creek, but they found a hole in the bottom of their bucket. Then, a little bird gives Princess Truly advice that saves the day. She shakes and fluffs her magical curls, casting a spell on the wind. A mystical rain soon begins to fall and giant, crunchy carrots appear. Now the bunnies can fill their hungry tummies!
“It’s an enchanting tale that inspires little girls to learn, to be helpful, to love their curly hair, and to use their imaginations,” said Kelly Greenawalt. “Princess Truly is a character that little girls can identify with and that parents WANT them to identify with. It is important for us to teach our children to love the skin they are in, to be passionate about helping our kids develop confidence. I’m hoping that this book and the efforts of likeminded mothers will inspire others to write and publish stories for our little girls, especially titles that feature black princesses and other protagonists that fall outside the usual stereotypes.’”
Amariah Rauscher, mother of two curly haired girls herself, created the whimsical illustrations throughout Princess Truly and The Hungry Bunny Problem, which is intended especially for girls ages 4-8. The book becomes available on November 17, National Adoption Day.
“As an adoptive mother and former foster mother, I am passionate about helping children find their forever families and chose this release date to create awareness,” said Kelly Greenawalt. “There are thousands of waiting children available for adoption in the United States, especially children of color. They need parents just like you!”
Amazon.com and other online retailers will offer Princess Truly and The Hungry Bunny Problem in paperback form for $10.99. Area bookstores may not carry this self-published title on their shelves, but they should be able to special order it. For more information, please visit www.trulygirls.com or www.facebook.com/kellygreenawalt.author.

FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Kelly Greenawalt is a wife, mother, and children’s book author living in La Porte, Texas. She and her husband adopted four children— Clay, Travis, Calista, and Kaia—and fostered many others, creating a beautiful “rainbow family.” She took the time to learn natural hair care techniques in order to help her children and to give them a healthy racial identity. As a result of her daughter’s dismay in not being able to identify with any of the princesses in today’s fairytales and pop culture, Greenawalt created the children’s picture book, Princess Truly and The Hungry Bunny Problem. She is also an advocate of adoption and founder of Friends By Adoption, a support group for adoptive mothers.

[Fashion] Maison Martin Margiela x H&M

For the 2012 Holiday season, H&M made the best decision since it’s existence [in our opinion]…partnering with the Maison Martin Margiela. The brand is older than you think, but made popular to youth by rapper, Kanye West. According to Wikipedia, ‘Throughout his career, Martin Margiela has maintained an extremely low profile. He has never had his picture taken and remains backstage after his shows. All media contact is dealt with via fax. Maison Martin Margiela’s ultra-discreet trademark consists of a piece of cloth with the numbers 0-23.’

The collection is a bit quirky but so couture. See the pics!
